In our modern, hyper-connected world, it often feels like we’re in a constant race against the clock. The demands of work, family, and social life can leave us feeling overwhelmed and stretched thin. But here is the truth: slowing down and finding balance isn't a luxury, it’s essential for your mental and physical well-being.

In this "always-on" society, the relentless pursuit of perfection has become the norm, and it’s fuelling our critical inner voices. That constant pressure to succeed, achieve, and outdo everyone else leads us to set unrealistic standards. Before we know it, we’re spiralling into feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt. As I’m sure you know, that does absolutely nothing for our mood or anxiety levels!

The "Default Mantras" of Burnout

Society as a whole has started to normalise this critical voice, but it’s so detrimental to our mental health. Let me ask you; how many times have you told yourself:

  • “I’m exhausted, but I can’t take time to rest.”

  • “Just keep pushing through.”

  • “What would people think if I actually called in sick?”

I hear these statements all the time in my practice. They’ve become the "default mantras" of modern life. But let’s be honest: this is the fastest way to hit burnout, likely before you even reach your goals. And I can only imagine what your inner critic would have to say then.

So, where do we start?

First of all, it’s important to recognise that perfection is an unattainable myth. Society has tricked us into believing it’s achievable, but if society created these hidden rules, we can choose to undo them, too.

Let’s start by normalising rest, leisure and most importantly mistakes.

I can practically see the face you just made! Mistakes? Absolutely not!

But I can guarantee you there isn't a human on this planet who knows everything about everything. We are bound to make mistakes. Owning and learning from them is actually what makes us human (and sets us apart from our primate cousins!).

Breaking the Cycle

There is a better way. Cultivating compassion and acceptance for ourselves and others is the first step towards silencing that inner critic and stepping off the hamster wheel of stress.

You can regain your power.

If you’re looking for support in finding balance, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) could be the solution. It helps you identify the perfectionistic or anxious thought patterns holding you back. Noticing that inner critic is just the first step; therapy gives you the techniques to challenge it and replace it with realistic, balanced thinking.

Together, we can:

  • Dismantle the cycle of stress: By breaking big problems into manageable pieces—thoughts, feelings, and behaviours—you gain immediate tools to lower your daily anxiety.

  • Reclaim control: You’ll learn to stop being a passive recipient of your emotions and start actively choosing your responses.

  • Build compassionate habits: Through targeted exercises, we’ll shift the focus from self-criticism to self-acceptance, building a foundation of self-worth that no external pressure can shake.
